Recently my partner of six-plus years asked me what music I listen to besides masses when I’m commuting or out and about. Not that I’m particularly secretive about my listening, but it turns out I am that mysterious woman (only in this context). Good Mischief clearly has too much rattling around in the mind. Why don’t I share an addition morsel in the form of a monthly playlist paired with my advice on how to enjoy the music? This month’s theme: it’s too darn hot.
Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits
This masterpiece is best enjoyed with a tease of a breeze within some heatwave doldrums. Pair with a crisp vinho verde and a dash of self-loathing.
Spanish Renaissance music
Who said Italians do it best? I’d insert a Spanish Inquisition joke here, but a Jewish person thoroughly enjoying music from this era and region is enough of a joke. Pair it with communion- and for the unbaptized- an iced-oat latte, because it was still a heat wave.
Meridian Brothers
No one’s name is Meridian nor are there any brothers in the band. It’s as if the quirky West Coast vibes of the tUnE-yArDs and the psychedelic genius of Manu Chao combined sonic forces. This funky Colombian group opened the show for salsa legend Joe Bataan and boy did they deliver. Their music pairs perfectly with a $7 falafel sandwich and a broken heat wave.
