Ok, kiddos, we are back to school, and the email factory is waiting for us to reply. Leaves are starting to fall, and people are back to open-mouth coughing on the subway. But we all need a little music, don’t we? This month marked the beginning of autumn, with some personally challenging anniversaries and way too many apples. Here are some of the pieces that have kept me company.
Joby Talbot
This feels like cheating since I’m performing this piece in a few weeks. If you’re a fan of complex choral music that is also accessible, this is for you. It is among the more challenging pieces I have worked on, but the composition is other-worldly and radiant. This pairs perfectly with a cup of tea and a blanket (ironic since the piece is about a brutal 40-day pilgrimage, but I don’t make the rules).
Punch Brothers
The Punch Brothers always feel like a warm, energized hug. I give them some credit for making bluegrass popular among youngsters again. I was always impressed with their jazzy take on traditional music, and boy, do these harmonies go wild. I recommend pairing this with way too many apples.
Freshly Ground
Freshlyground’s music sounds like sunshine after the rain, if that were a definitive sound. They are the perfect midday pick-me-up for when you’re in that 2 pm slump. Their afro-fusion sound can put a smile on anyone’s face. This South African band pairs perfectly with a sparkly beverage and dancing with a loved one in your living room.
